Key West sunset moves 30-45 minutes across the year — 5:32pm in December, 8:19pm in June. Every boat leaves the dock 45 minutes before sunset. Google 'sunset key west' the morning of your trip.
Anniversary or first-timer with a partner: schooner. Bachelor party or big group: sunset catamaran. Want to eat dinner: dinner cruise. Price is the third question, not the first.
The Historic Seaport is a maze at 5pm. Parking is limited — bike, walk, or take a golf cart. Boats leave on time and there's no refund if you miss it.
It's 5-10 degrees cooler on the water once the sun drops. Bring a light layer even in July. Non-slip shoes on the schooner (or barefoot). Sunglasses stay on until sunset actually finishes.
November through April, the sunset boats sell out 3-5 days ahead. May through October you can usually book same-day. Full moon nights and holidays sell out anywhere from a week to a month early.

Slightly southwest of the island — you're looking out over the Gulf of Mexico, not the Atlantic. That's why the west-facing spots (Mallory Square, Sunset Pier, Fort Zach) get the best view from land. On a boat you can position for a clean horizon.
About two hours. You leave the dock 30-45 minutes before sunset, sail out to open water, watch the sun set, then head back. You'll be back at the dock 30-40 minutes after sundown.
Boats sail rain or shine — a cloudy sunset can be more dramatic than a clear one because the clouds catch color. Boats only cancel for lightning or high seas. If the captain cancels, you get a full refund or a reschedule.
