New Town is the eastern third of the island — north of Smathers Beach, around the airport. It's home to the bigger hotels, condo rentals, and the chains. Less character than Old Town but cheaper, easier parking, faster access on/off the island, and a quick hop to Smathers and the watersports docks. A great base if you've got a rental car or are flying in/out.
Salty Angler and Salute! on Higgs Beach are the under-the-radar restaurants worth crossing the island for. Higgs has its own pier and is mellower than Smathers.
Can I walk to Old Town?+
It's 2-3 miles depending where you stay. Bike, scooter, or the city Duval Loop bus (free) gets you there in 10-15 minutes.
Best beaches near here?+
Smathers Beach is 5 minutes south; Higgs Beach is a bit further west. Both are public and free.
